The Calipso
training and self-help formats have been tested with users to maximise
usability and effectiveness. Details of the tests and results are
given below:
A trial of
the Calipso training format showed that users acquired greater
professional
skills from completing the CD-ROM-based course compared with
lecture-based teaching and gains in clinical knowledge were the
same.
Why? The
CD-ROM offers structured skills training using 'live' patient case
studies allowing users to practice developing their skills by working
with a range of patients on-screen.

Recent trials
of Overcoming Bulimia, a self-help CD-ROM show that patients are
discouraged from committing unhelpful behaviours which could worsen
their condition and learn new skills to help them manage. Users
who find it difficult to talk about their illness with a practitioner
particularly value the anonymity provided by the computer-based
course.
Results of the
trials will be published here soon.
