The medical experts behind Calipso

The Calipso concept of delivering training and self-help materials via interactive CD-ROM was developed by a team of medical experts from one of the UK's leading medical schools.

The founding members, from the University of Leeds School of Medicine*, are Dr Chris Williams, Professor David Cottrell, Dr Pat Harkin and Dr Sue Aubin. They are experts in mental health training and teach university medical students. Dr Williams and Professor Cottrell are also practitioners and each manage a caseload of patients with mental health conditions.

Profiles

Dr Chris Williams is a UKCP accredited Cognitive Therapist with many years specialist experience providing Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. He is immediate Past-President of the lead body for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in the United Kingdom, the British association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP).

Now based at University of Glasgow as Senior Lecturer in Psychological Medicine, he remains very closely involved in Calipso and authors the majority of new course content material.

Professor David Cottrell is Professor of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry & Director of
Learning and Teaching at the School of Medicine in Leeds. He is also a UKCP Registered Family Therapist. He has many years specialist experience as a therapist and in delivering innovative learning and teaching packages. He has served as a contributing member of the Calipso Management Team for over 5 years.

Dr Pat Harkin graduated from Leeds School of Medicine in 1981 and entered pathology the following year. Histopathology, like many laboratory disciplines, has always had a strong IT element and he soon became involved in developing the UK’s first computer-based learning suite for undergraduate pathology. His pathology software was taken up by many other medical schools in Britain and abroad, and he has also helped develop education material for use in paediatrics, psychiatry, veterinary medicine and dentistry. He now works full time in the School of Medicine administration, taking responsibility for the integration of C & IT into the curriculum and is involved in developing the University’s e-learning strategy.

Dr Susan Aubin graduated from Leeds Medical school in 1988. After six years training in psychiatry she joined the Calipso team in 1995.

Her role in the team includes authoring content and beta testing of CD-ROMS currently in development.

Professor Cottrell and Dr Aubin are based at the Division of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences in Relation to Medicine, University of Leeds which is one of the UK's principal centres for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in clinical psychiatry, clinical psychology, behavioural sciences and psychotherapy.

* The University of Leeds School of Medicine is internationally renowned for it's provision of high quality medical education to both undergraduate and postgraduate students completing their professional medical training at the School each year.
